Penguins are a type of flightless birds that appear in a variety of Mario games they are usually seen in cold climates and are good swimmers much like their real world counterparts. Penguins are usually not depicted as enemies and usually won't attack Mario though they are sometimes used as obstacles or hurdles in Mario Kart games. Some Penguins even speak to Mario usually either offering or asking for help.
