SpongeBob SquarePants is the eponymous protagonist of SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon's most successful animated series.
Origins[edit | edit source]
The oldest use of the character was in "The Intertidal Zone", a planned educational comic series by Stephen Hillenburg. At that time the concept was very different: SpongeBob was then known as "Bob the Sponge", who co-hosted the comic with Rocky the shrimp (who seems to have went nowhere). The comics were never published. Later on in 1994, when the pilot was being worked on for the show, Bob evolved into "SpongeBoy", who was essentially SpongeBob in all but name. The name was changed due to legal issues, so SpongeBoy became SpongeBob, and the name stuck.
Character[edit | edit source]
SpongeBob is a yellow anthropomorphic sea sponge. He lives in a pineapple (under the sea) and is employed as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, a fast food restaurant. He tries to get a driver's license at boating school but never passes, which is a running gag in the show. He is relentlessly optimistic and enthusiastic towards his friends and job. His hobbies include catching jellyfish, blowing bubbles, playing with Patrick (his best friend) and unintentionally annoying his uptight neighbor Squidward.
Appearances[edit | edit source]
SpongeBob has appeared in every episode of the series since its inception. The show became a massive hit early on, and then he was spun off into anything else imaginable: two theatrical movies (with a third currently in the works), a comic book series (one that was actually published), several video games, kid's toys, and much more. The franchise has been a smash hit for over twenty years, and with word of a spinoff coming soon, it shows no signs of fading anytime soon.
